Last week Wednesday, nearly 100 attendees gathered at the Hilton Garden Inn to hear Bob Edwards, the H.O.P. Coach, present on the topic of Human & Organizational Performance. With H.O.P., the goal “is to become a lot less surprised by human error and failure…and instead, become a lot more interested in learning!” Bob was able to step in for Dr. Todd Conklin, and did an excellent job!
In his presentation, Bob not only covered the Basic Principles of Human Performance listed below, but he also talked about the importance of building defenses into systems and processes through purposeful operational learning events focused on how an event happened, rather than why.
Basic Principles of Human Performance:
- People make errors
- Error-likely situations are predictable
- Individual behaviors are influenced
- Operational upsets can be avoided
- Our response to failure matters.
In the presentation, Bob also challenged many of our paradigms around safety and talked about weaknesses of popular safety strategies like Zero and Behavior Based Safety. The presentation was excellent and had many attendees discussing the application in the social event that followed.
Prior to Bob’s presentation, a brief chapter business meeting was conducted with updates from the committee chairs and voting on board positions. Following the presentation, a few of our chapter’s founding members who were in attendance were recognized, and then attendees enjoyed some networking.
We would also like to take this opportunity to say a final “thank you” as well to numerous sponsors who helped make this event possible!
