Sub Specialty Contractor

Looking for some insight into how other subcontractors are paying (or not paying) the time spent traveling to projects from the shop.

We have roughly 150 employees that are traveling up to 2+ hours a day to project locations. Our pay rate for travel was recently changed from hourly to mileage. This has become increasingly difficult to manage and has only reduced our cost slightly.

We have considered doing away with travel pay altogether (only when mobilizing to one project, any time spent traveling from project to project is still paid as required by the state of WI) but are concerned we will risk losing employees. 

Any suggestions/advice that has worked for your company(s) would be appreciated!

Our employees are paid their regular hourly rate for travel.  We have employees go to sites each week and they have up to a 4 hours drive from our shop to site.

Most of our crews take a company truck home and leave from their house directly to the jobsites.  Since they don't start work technically till they get to the jobsite (the drive from home to jobsite is just a commute), we don't have to pay travel.   But we do pay ONe Way travel as a benefit if the jobsite is more than 50 miles away.  We feel closer than 50 miles, that consitutes local and no one way travel paid.  But beyond 50 miles its paid one way travel (for the entire crew regardless of who is driving).   

Keep in mind if a crew comes to the shop and does anything work related (even load/unload a truck etc...) the time starts then.   But if they are just going from house to jobsite then travel technically isn't compensable.   But again, we pay one way as a benefit.
