  • 1.  Cost Code Structure

    Hi,

We are a Heavy Civil contractor doing mostly DOT work in New York State, and are brainstorming a new cost code structure entirely.  Given that we follow the same contract item numbers everywhere, does anyone have reason NOT to utilize these DOT item numbers in our cost code structure?  We are thinking of using the 3 digit prefix from the DOT items, and then have 3 digits of internal suffixes for 6 digit cost code.  For example, 203 is DOT prefix for excavation items.  We would do something like this:

Does this make sense, or should be we looking at a whole different structure?  Any input on what has worked or not worked for DOT contractors would be helpful, including number of characters.

    Thanks,

    Mike Ryan
