Social Media, CFMA, & YOU

I saw a recent posting on LinkedIn in the CFMA Group that I thought was a great question, with more than a dozen people responding.  All good stuff!  Job numbering ideas? | LinkedIn

In my opinion, discussions such as this belong in the CFMA Connection Cafe as well.  Oftentimes, we ask (or are asked by) folks in our organization how or why to do something; to research best practices, to validate our own decisions or even provide us with a different perspective on how to do something.  With 6,500 members, where else can you get expert advice or opinions from both your peers and in a case such as this, from those associate members who sell, install and service software particular to the construction industry.

Everyone has there own preferences regarding social media.  Personally, I'm winning the battle with FaceBook; still don't have it, and for me, I'm not interested in having it anytime soon.  I've got Twitter (@Joe_Burkett) and after an early infatuation, I'm not using it even on a weekly basis.  I have had LinkedIn for the longest period of time, and probably check in there more frequently, but I'm not living either my professional or personal life through any of these social media vehicles, and I wonder whether it's because I'm "of a certain age" or because it doesn't help me on a daily basis perform my job responsibilities.

To me, The Connection Cafe is a place I go to see what's being talked about that may impact my work world.  LinkedIn Groups can help there too.

What are you using for social media to stay current?  What's helping you be better at what you do on a daily basis?

Just spotted your blog for the first time, Joe - good stuff!
I don't believe your aversion to social media is a reflection of your age (at least I hope not!), but rather, as you mention, the fact that it doesn't seem to relevantly impact your daily work life. I have FB but it is strictly for personal use. I have a LinkedIn account that I check into 3-5 times weekly. Good for business networking.
I am pleasantly surprised to say I've found Twitter to be a great resource both personally and professionally. Cal Beyer (@riskleadership) regularly posts informative and interesting professional articles that are very useful to my business life. On the other hand, I love reading ESPN, Deadspin, and Def Leppard tweets, too!
All of these resources help me stay informed in my personal and professional life. I need to be a more regular visitor to our Connection Cafe - thanks for the reminder!
