Modernizing a 70-year-old family run construction business

Brownco Construction has been building in Southern California since 1953. Now led by third-generation president, Andrew Brown, the family-owned contractor specializes in complex deep foundation work and has worked on projects with big names like Glendale Water and Power and SpaceX.

But until 2022, the field still ran on handwritten time cards, paper daily reports, and 5:00 AM dispatch calls. Almost every card read "6:00 AM to 2:30 PM", regardless of when anyone actually arrived or left. Payroll spent two to three days every pay period chasing paper and re-keying it by hand. None of it connected to job costs, and none of it would hold up in a dispute.

Then Brownco put the whole operation on one platform.

The results speak for themselves:

  • More than 16 hours a week of payroll admin freed up

  • GPS clock-in that exposed time fraud paper never could have caught

  • Daily reports that have recovered tens of thousands of dollars in change orders and delay claims

  • A headcount that more than doubled, from roughly 45 to over 93, without adding back-office overhead

We sat down with President Andrew Brown to walk through exactly how he brought his business into the 21st century.
