Does anyone have a small power tool tracking device that allows them to put on a tool to track its location?  We've seen a rash of thefts and we'd like to be able to track our more expensive pieces ($2,000-$10,000).  Our site utility equipment and lifts already have a solution, that solution is just not financially feasible for the smaller power tools.

We've developed integration with many of the bluetooth tags, ie, Milwaukee, Bosch, DeWalt, etc. (not Hilti since it requires a subscription), but have not released it.  We are a little skittish due to the inherent issues with the tech and the support calls that it would generate.  We were pretty excited about the Apple tags until we realized that a thief would be warned they were being tracked!

The best solution would be a GPS tag for more expensive items.  It would be up to you where you draw that line!  Probably not a $2000 item, but maybe a $10k item.  There are a number of vendors that offer a $75 tag for $12-15/mo.

External theft is a huge issue with tools, but others are employee theft, hoarding, buying things you don't need, utilization, productivity, forgetfulness, etc.  We've taken the approach that if you can give the field visibility into your asset catalog and make employees accountable then that solves many of the issues.

With thefts of that size, you are better off trying to prevent that theft than hope to recover with a tracking.  Have you investigated how these thefts occurred?  What could you do different to better secure those tools at night?

    Shawn,

To build on another comment, we have a wireless and battery backed up security system in each of our conexes to at least set off an alarm and call the police when needed.
