To those who may be interested:

In an effort to make the world a better place, or at least the world of the Affordable Care Act, I wrote a practical guide to coding. I hope you don’t find this too bold, but I greatly appreciate the work we all do in our communities and realize there are some tasks that are unnecessarily difficult.

The attached story summarizes my experience with the ACA last year when my company reported its first 1095s. What became a rather frustrating process also became the basis for a long set of notes on how to practically code several employee situations, such as Interns who begin as Interns, then move to part time and then full time; or full timers who start mid-year; those who leave and elect COBRA, and several others. These notes were updated for 2016 and I used this guide on my own ACA coding and found it useful.

By point of reference, my company is a fully insured one so the examples pertain to Parts I and II of the 1095 and have flow diagrams of how each coding situation was derived pursuant to the ACA. If you are self-insured or partially self-insured you may need additional help for Part III; but this guide will at least give you some guidance in the other Parts.

I like to help people, so I’m forwarding this article through various channels in hopes of saving colleagues some level of stress.

I’m no expert, but I do keep good notes.

I hope your new year is off to a great start.
