    Is anyone willing to share their bereavement policy.  For example; is it part of your PTO days or a separate special leave.  Do you pay so many days or is it all unpaid if they don't want to use PTO.

    Bereavement is separate from any PTO time.  3 paid days for immediate family members, and 1 paid day for extended family members.

    Typically up to three days paid for any family member up to grandparents or down to grandchildren end Sideways for siblings.  In-laws for both directions.  This separate from PTO and anything beyond the three days they do not want to use PTO on is unpaid.

    Hello Rachel, this is our Bereavement policy.


    1. The Company provides days off with pay for regular full-time Employees to attend funerals or make funeral arrangements for immediate family members or close non-family members as follows:
      1. Immediate Family Members:
        • Employee's spouse, parents, stepparents, siblings, children, stepchildren, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, or grandchild.
        • Employee may take up to three (3) 8-hour days off with pay
      2. Non-family Member:
        • Employee's close non-family member
        • Employee may take up to one (1) 8-hour days off with pay
        • This time off will be considered by the Employee's supervisor on a case-by-case basis
      3. The Company may provide a portion of these same days off with pay to part-time Employees by special approval of the Employee's supervisor
      4. Additional unpaid time off may be granted by special approval of the Employee's supervisor

    While I completely understand the need for a Bereavement policy to be addressed, personally I do not understand how companies can dictate a policy of exactly how many days an employee is allowed to take for an immediate family member vs. non-family member.  For example, when my best friend of 30+ years father passed away, I was devastated and needed a few days to help with arrangements and be with the family, not to mention time to travel to another state.  According to most company policies, as it being a non-family member, I should have only had 1 day (8 hours) off.  I know most policies will also include exceptions based on manager's approval, but that also means it is left up to a manager that may or may not have any compassion for an employee's personal situation.

    With all that being said, I am very thankful for the policy we have in place currently.  Each employee starts off with 20 days of PTO (Paid Time Off).  Additional days are added on a scale for years of service.  PTO includes vacation, personal days, sick days, and bereavement, therefore each employee is able to use them however is necessary for their personal situations.  The policy also still states that additional days may be taken if necessary due to unforeseen circumstances such as death in the family, serious illness or hospitalization, natural disaster, etc.

    I know that our policy may not work for all companies but I think it is important for employers/managers to understand that they cannot dictate the effect any death may have on an employee.

    As a side note, a close friend who works for Waste Management just told me yesterday that the company made an announcement that they will be changing their policy to be UNLIMITED days off for salaried employees.  They have found that employees actually end up taking fewer days off in a year than if they are given a set number of days.  It is definitely something to think about especially with so many working remotely now.
