I am trying to determine an average staff size for the Accounting Department of a Long Island, NY based Construction Manager.  Please respond with your Company size, general geographic area and number of financial staff and total salary for the Accounting Department.  I feel our Company Accounting Department is understaffed and ownership feels otherwise.

    Thank you.

If you let us know how big the company is and the size of your accounting department I'm sure there will be plenty of respondents.

Right now we are approximately $100M+ in revenues and have about 50 employees total. As a Construction Manager/GC we employ Project Managers and Job Supers.  The actual construction work is performed by subcontractors. The process is paperwork intensive due to the need for full transparency with all invoicing and paper backup for all direct costs.  Additionally with a large subcontractor base, there is significant time spent on liability and WC insurance issues and documentation.  Currently there are 5 employees in the Accounting Department.

Andrew,  It's a tough question to answer.

The need for accounting staff varies widely depending on whether a general or specialty contractor, whether union or open shop, how the accounting system is used (or not) in the company, how roles are divided between ops and accounting, and how defined the processes, policies and procedures - just to name a few.  You may want to visit with ownership on the trade off between investing in your systems and staffing your team.  You may find they're more open to your talent needs, once they better understand how elevating both your systems and your people will lead to more timely and accurate deliverables (business intelligence).

We are ~$80M in revenue and we have 1 CFO/IT/HR, 1 Controller and 1 AP Clerk.  As someone else mentioned before, I think it really depends on your organization, processes, software and the employees you have in those positions.
