Spreadsheet Server Gold License

Is anybody using gold licenses?  I'm considering purchasing a couple of gold licenses to pull data from JC.  What reports are you generating with it?  Are you satisfied?

    Thanks in advance,

We have a few and use them regularly.  We use them to flood actual costs and billings to our Excel WIP, equipment fuel allocations, payroll reports, 401(k) reports, and more.  I am a big fan of Spreadsheet Server and what it can do :)

    Scott,

I might be mistaken, but I think you need the Platinum license to create the reports using JC data (at least for Spectrum), and only need Silver to refresh the reports/pull the data (our Spreadsheet Server power user is out this week....I just take advantage of his good work).  I thought Gold only allowed report creation for G/L data.

Regardless, we just purchased SS last fall and have loved it. We use it for our WIP reporting, individual job/customer reporting, various employee/benefits reports, equipment reporting, financials, JEs/Accruals for non-G/L data, etc....and we haven't even had it for a year.  It has saved us an immense amount of time and provided us with reporting and info. we did not previously have easy access to.

    Scott,

We use the Query Designer that comes with the Gold and Platinum licenses for many outputs including several related to JC and PM. It is very easy to use and you don't need to know SQL since it builds the SQL as you pick different tables and field values. You can find the tables in Vista reports or you can simply click F3 on a field that you want to find the table/field names. You can schedule reports to go to different users via Excel outputs; you can Build a Template directly in Excel for output; you can run other queries via the Query link within Excel Spreadsheet Server with or without Smart Parms; you can distribute financial data; and drill down if applicable.

I have information requests on a regular basis and can typically create a Query for the requested output within minutes. Rather than modifying Crystal Reports over and over we use the Query Designer tool as our "go to" data mining option. Spreadsheet Server is mainly for the General Ledger/AP/etc. data access and drilldown whereas Query Designer allows access to all module outputs.

    All-

Keep in mind that with Spreadsheet Server, it IS Excel.  So if you are data mining a large amount of data, you will be limited to the number of rows that Excel can return in one worksheet... I have had complaints from some of our clients as well that using Query Designer in Excel for large amounts of data will significantly slow down the return of data.

We have both Platinum and Gold licenses, and use it for job cost, a/p, payroll and 401k reports, etc.  The only downside I've come across is it sometimes takes a lot of Excel resources to "re-calculate" some of the queries.  But like Betsey, I'm a big fan.

We've been using 2 gold licenses and am currently evaluating either upgrading one to Platinum or adding a Platinum license so that I'll have access to the Query Designer. I am a bit confused with some of the posts indicating availability of the Query Designer with Gold licenses.  Anyone have experience with training options for the Platinum license? The options I've been presented with are travelling to one of their training facilities, on-line training or paying to have a training come to our location.

    Jeff,
If you want to use the Query Designer it is helpful to have someone comfortable with SQL.  We have that resource here, and it is very useful.

Relative to the training, Insight/SS was fairly adamant about coming to our location to do training, which is something we did not want to pay for, or felt we needed. In the end, we pushed back hard enough and just had on-line training for our power user. He is quite technically advanced (relative to excel, and also picks up on database usage fairly quickly), so that was adequate for our purposes. If you don't have someone with those capabilities, you might need on-site training....but that gets pretty expensive.

You can message me offline if you would like more info.
