I'm wondering what GPS tracking tools others are putting on heavy equipment?  The main use for us would be in the event of a theft.

    Hi Shawn,
We run about 2000 pieces of heavy equipment that are spread out all across the US.  Most of the new equipment comes with telematics already built into it which allows us to see exactly where the equipment is located.  However, for the few pieces of equipment that don't include that functionality we typically install LoJack so they can be located in case of theft.  I am not sure, but I think LoJack doesn't charge for this service unless the equipment is stolen, then they charge to recover it.  Overall, this makes it very cost effective.

We use HCSS Telematics (we use HCSS HeavyBid & HeavyJob & Equip 360 also).
We use it to track locations, meter hours, maintenance, speeding, etc.
We started it on the company trucks first and now have them on all of our equipment including pumps.  We can get notifications if a pump shuts off, etc.

We use Geotab (https://www.geotab.com/) for both our fleet and heavy equipment. You can create geofences for job sites that will allow you to run reports by job showing when equipment enters and leaves the jobsite. If you are concerned about theft, you can setup notifications when the equipment leaves the jobsite.

We use Equipment Share, which gives us tracking, meter reads etc. as well as geofences that notify us when equipment is moved.  They are very cost effective.
