Corona Virus

Wondering what other CFMA members are doing, or are considering doing, relative to any prep work we could possibly do related to the Corona virus.

Is there anything we can be, or should be doing at this point to prepare in the event this turns more serious in the US?

    All comments welcome

    Hi Lyn

I recently found a section on the CDC website, specific to recommendations for businesses and employers - Interim Guidance for Businesses and Employers to Plan and Respond to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), February 2020

NPR had a blog post on this regarding individual preparation.  One point related to work environments – allow people to work from home to reduce contact points.

Two of the biggest things we’re doing to prepare and suggest others do is plan now for telecommuting, to the extent possible, along with potential “staggered shifts” for all types of employees and ensuring the review of force majeure provisions in our contracts. Whether it be because of supplier delays, quarantine impacts, amongst others, it’s important to protect ourselves and get approved schedule delays when they happen that are caused by COVID19.

The CDC has a flu pandemic planning guide for employers which isn’t perfect for this scenario but can be used as a good guide. A quick internet search will bring it up pretty easily

We are planning a test of our disaster preparedness.  Since many of our hourly staff in payroll and accounts payable work with desktop computers, we need to make sure our backup supply of laptops are current with software and configured correctly to allow for telework.

    Coronavirus Alert Center Webpage -

The above webpage is designed as a resource for the executive teams and decision makers as they decide their response to the situation. The page will evolve and be updated as new information becomes available. Hope this helps!

    CFMA Members,

With a growing death toll and a rise in the number of reported cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), efforts to contain its spread have already resulted in business interruption and supply chain disruption.  Although lines of insurance such as workers' compensation, health and life may cover coronavirus-related claims, we do not expect this to be the case for business interruption losses.  We provide a summary of expected property and casualty insurance outcomes relating to core coverages in the link below.  However, we encourage our clients to file first-party claims if losses are sustained, third-party liability claims if such claims are presented to our clients, and workers' compensation claims if claims are presented by employees, regardless of our guidance on the likelihood of coverage.

Attached is some information to help you better understand the virus, what to do if you are sick and some ways to help protect yourself.

We are also seeing an increased number of attempted phishing attempts. Cyber criminals are using the coronavirus epidemic in their attacks.  We have been made aware of e-mails purporting to be from  the World Health Organization (WHO).  These e-mails prompt you to enter your e-mail address and password to get helpful safety advice - and doing so, you inadvertently give the crooks access to your e-mail.  I would advise putting this on the radar of your staff.

Our team is involved in multiple conversations with our partners around the globe in regards to the virus and the exposures businesses could potentially face.  We will continue to keep you updated with information that we feel is valuable and can help.

    Best regards,

    Hi Lyn;

I didn't scroll down far enough to see your questions - I'm also wondering how CFMA member firms are addressing this.

We held an enterprise-wide Webcast yesterday to help our clients prepare for the corona virus. The content included expertise from health and welfare, P&C, retirement planning, government affairs and employee communications. I am posting the link below for the replay. Hopefully this will turn into an abundance of preparation for a minimal impact to business.

    Please feel free to share.

I hope everyone is safe and healthy during this crisis.  Here is a link to an interview with the former area director of the US DOL on the FFCRA -  In it, he goes through several helpful examples and how to apply the act to various paid and unpaid leave situations.  There are also many other interviews on our YouTube channel -

I hope you find them useful and helpful.  Stay safe.
