  • 1.  Talking Heavy - The Invisible Crisis in Construction & Mental Health Construction Survey

    Posted 03-29-2021 09:36
Our next publication of Talking Heavy (CFMA's e-publication focused solely on issues and relevant topics affecting the Heavy Highway community) will be released later this week.  We are very excited to announce that in this quarter's publication, we will be including the first of a two-part article series by Cal Beyer and Ross Squires, addressing the "Invisible Crisis".  Part 1 of the series will describe the scope and magnitude of the mental/behavioral health problem in construction and Part 2 (expected to be released in May/June 2021) will focus on strategies and solutions to address these topics in your companies.

I would also like to take this opportunity to promote the Mental Health in Construction survey that Cal is conducting.  We have all seen the impact that Cal has had within our industry to bring awareness and promote mental wellbeing and reduce the risk of suicide within our workforce.   I know this has been shared previously within the General community of CFMA Connection Café, but this is certainly a topic that can't be over communicated enough.  If you have not yet responded, please do so, while keeping in mind Cal's instructions below.

Below is a link to a Mental Health in Construction Survey.

This survey is being launched in email campaigns by the 3 co-sponsors starting the week of March 29th

    LINK TO THE SURVEY:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ConstructionMentalHealth

    WHAT:
The Center for Workplace Mental Health (Workplace Mental Health - Home), a program of the American Psychiatric Association Foundation, is conducting this pulse survey to better understand the needs and experiences of the construction industry when it comes to mental health issues.  The co-sponsors of this survey are:

    • Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA)
    • CSDZ
    • Holmes Murphy & Associates

Although suicide prevention is an extremely important issue within the construction industry, the scope of this survey is limited to mental health and substance use disorder issues.

Intended Audience:  The intended audience for this survey is leaders, managers and supervisors of construction companies, and labor unions/trusts. These are the entities that employ construction craft/trades-workers.

Survey Link can be shared via email. It is acceptable to have multiple respondents from different listed positions within a company/organization.

Please do not post on social media (e.g., Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, etc.) as we can't control "bot" responses.

IMPORTANT -- This survey is not intended for:

    • Craft/Trades-workers
    • Professional partners of construction companies (such as Accountants, Bankers, Business and Insurance Advisors, IT/Software Providers, Lawyers, and/or Sureties – these professionals are encouraged to share the survey with their construction company owners/clients).

Findings: Findings from this survey will be reported so that no identifiable information relating to either individuals or organizations will be disclosed. Information collected in this survey will also be used to develop resources and tools to benefit the mental health and well-being of individuals employed in the construction industry.

Survey: There are 20 questions (most are multiple choice) with an estimated time to complete of less than 15 minutes.

    Close DateApril 16th.

Dave - Thank you very much for your ongoing support of these important topics.

The Talking Heavy articles will feature some conversations with Heavy/Highway contractors in both issues.

The Mental Health in Construction survey is a very important undertaking.

CFMA's support on the survey is invaluable!

    All the best!

Dave, this is a great issue of Talking Heavy that contains short articles with a lot of meaning!

It only took a short time to complete the Mental Health in Construction survey. I'm hoping that others in the Heavy Highway community will take a few minutes to provide feedback by completing this important survey.

I will echo previous comments that this is another outstanding issue of Talking Heavy.  I particularly recommend that you read Cal Beyer's article.  Suicide is a major issue in our industry and we should all get on board with promoting prevention. One way you can do this, is to participate in the survey.

It was a great article and survey. I shared the survey with our VP of Safety and Risk Management. We discussed the crisis and what the Company is doing to address it. Thanks for bringing this to our attention years back. I know first hand, this is serious!

Hi Robert, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I remember our first conversations on this topic now many years ago.

It really grew organically within CFMA from discussions on human capital risk management, and all the work I did with CFMA and Brian Cooney on the topic of emergency preparedness and disaster response post-Hurricane Katrina (et al).

Thanks for sharing the survey with Risk Management & Safety, too!

It will be nice to see everyone at a Talking Heavy Dawn Peer Group!

    Dave

Congratulations on another great issue of Talking Heavy.  I would certainly encourage all readers to complete the survey on Mental Health in Construction.  It only takes a few moments to complete and will provide Cal Beyer with valuable insight on what companies are doing to manage this critical issue in the construction industry.  Thanks also to Cal for his efforts in this arena.
