  • 1.  Establishing Accountability for PPE

    Hello -

We are having issues with having our crews be accountable for having all of their personally issued PPE with them everyday to be able to work.  We tell them to keep all of their items in a backpack/duffel bag and to keep it with them/in their lockers so that it is readily available everyday.  They are notorious for leaving items in trucks that then they are not in and they are then missing items.  The big issue we are currently focused on are fall protection harnesses - they wear them, take them off and throw them in the box on the truck instead of keeping them with them, and they are getting lost and the guys don't have them when they need them.  These are high-cost items and also necessary to keep working going - wondering if anyone else is having issues like this and if you have found a solution.

We are wondering if we gave them a logo'd duffel bag if that would help?  Make it more official to keep things in it and with them?

    Open to ideas.

    Thank you!

Perhaps you can make it a policy that you will replace the PPE once and then they will have to pay for it through a payroll deduction. I suggest you also require return of any worn or broken equipment that needs replaced, at no cost to the employee. Of course, the policy would have to be distributed and you would need to get it signed so you have authorization to do this. It is likely that once the procedure is known, they will start guarding their PPE as if it was their own, and few will end up paying for lost harnesses.

We provide first set (Hard Hat, Safety Vest, Safety Glasses, Gloves) at no charge and if they return a pair of gloves or safety goggles that are bad we will replace them as long as it is of the type that we provide.  After that they are charged for them via payroll deduction.

I really appreciate all the input on this!  Some good ideas to work with and as always nice to hear we aren't the only ones dealing with these issues :)
