    Hi all!

    My company has grown significantly in the last couple of years and I find myself struggling to determine how much (if at all) the accounting department needs to grow to keep pace. So far, we haven't added any roles, but we have implemented some software to lighten the data-entry work load.

    We did $65M last year, and my accounting department has 5 team members: Controller (also handles HR), Accounting Manager, AP Clerk, Billing/AR Clerk, Payroll Clerk.

    What does your department look like? What roles or other solutions have you implemented as you've grown?

    We are an ~$100M GC. I am the CFO, but I don't handle any daily responsibilities. I am the final reviewer on costs that hit GL codes, final reviewer for payments (made each Thursday) and final reviewer for payroll (each Wednesday). We have an AP Coordinator who handles all invoices and payments, and Accounting Manager who does AR, Payroll, and financial reporting. I do have a receptionist who puts invoices into Timberscan (images only, no coding) and an Admin who works one day a week for our owner who reconciles most of our bank accounts. We do have a Contract Administrator and she handles all sub and owner billings on our contracts. So I guess we have 2 FT accounting staff and I would say 2 more part time. We use Procore,  Sage 300CRE and Timberscan.

    ​Juli,  on the surface it sounds like you have the positions covered.  Keep in mind that as a Specialty Contractor your needs will vary from that of a GC.  Especially since you also do Service.  Service typically requires more administrative support.  If you are over whelmed my suggestion might be to add a Project/Service Coordinator position.  Good Luck!

    Good morning.

    We are the same size company in the same state. Our department size is similar to yours and i consider all areas to be covered: VP of Finance, Sr. Accounting Generalist, two Accounting Generalists, Payroll Specialist. I also have Contract Administrator (contracts, labor compliance, CPR and OCIP reporting)  and Office Coordinator reporting to me.
