I'm interested in alternatives to our current cell phone and hot spots for WIFI at job sites.  Our data charges are through the roof!

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I have been debating the same issue.  What are other companies doing to deploy mobile resources; both devices and data in the field.  We also have many LTE enabled devices (phones/ipads) that roam around job sites eating data even if there is already an established internet connection.  Most of our project span at least several months but typically last a year.  Would love to hear about your policies and ideas.

We use Verizon cell service jet packs when we don't have job site Wifi.

High cell data usage is a consistent monitoring process.  We've found many PM's/Superintendents leaving all their applications open on their phones all the time.  Navigation apps and others left running in the background were causing us to far exceed our data plans.  Once we "trained" everyone to close apps they were not using, our data usage dropped.  Also, once they realized we monitored cell usage and followed up on unusually high levels by calling them up, phones stopped getting used for excessive non work related internet (e.g. games, etc).  Finally, we reimburse employees $25 - $50 per month when they choose to keep their personal phone and use it for work (i.e. they don't want to have 2 phones).  The $50 rate is for PM's and Sups and is based on what it would have cost us to get them a phone.

We first try to get the local internet providers to go ahead and install drops. If that is not available we a have a few satellite internet providers we use. In OKC, OK we use Atlink and Chickasaw Telecom. We do still have hotspots though but they connect through a tunnel to our office so it's only 1 connection instead of several. We also use a mobile device management platform combined with Verizon that helps with monitoring. In addition, when the company phones/tablets are issued, I turn off all background updates except for the 4 or 5 they really need on.

Try looking into T-Mobile Unlimited Plan (versus a Verizon Limited Data Plan or another provider's limited data plan). Comparable service (versus Verizon depending on location) that includes Unlimited Data / Internet option (up to 50 GB and even then, they say, it shouldn't slow down).
