I'm curious how other companies treat FMLA leave.  We currently provide unpaid leave, but I am wondering if we should provide some sort of compensation to remain competitive in this job market.

​Hi Teresa,

The State of Washington has passed legislation requiring paid family leave that will be administered by the Washington Employment Security Department.  Beginning in 2019 employees and employers will begin contributing to the fund with benefit payouts beginning 2020.  ESD has just now begun issuing draft rules - you can sign up with ESD for notices related to this new program.  I would recommend reviewing the state's new requirements before designing a plan since you will need a waiver to not participate in the ESD program.

Our FMLA leave is unpaid if the employee does not have available PTO.
