CCIFP Exam

    Hi all,

I am in the beginning stages to prep for my CCIFP exam. There are so many resources, the CCIFP Overview Seminar....The Book, the Building Profits magazines, the study guide... I am not sure where to start. It all seems overwhelming, and I know those are all great resources. Does anyone have any advice on where to start initially? I am not even sure what to study exactly.

I would like to find a study group, but I am not sure if there are any local ones.

    Thanks,

    Brooke

Start by taking the exam so that you will find out how much you know. If you are unsuccessful, you'll get your scores back and you'll know where to concentrate your study. Worse case is you'll pay a few hundred dollars I retake fees. Best case is you might pass or you'll save dozens of hours of hours of studying in areas you are already proficient.

I would suggest you sign up for the prep class and if possible as a part of that join a study group. While you are waiting for the class to start,  read the book. Take the magazines to work and read during lunch or when you have a few minutes. Total immersion will get you in the right mindset for the exam

I took and passed the exam last fall.  I'll share my process and, hopefully, that will help you get started.

I started out with taking the overview webinar offered by CFMA.  The overview is very broad information, so I did not find it as an end all study source.  It showed me the areas that I was proficient on and which areas I needed to focus my studying on.  For example, I work in public accounting, so I'm was already proficient on the financial reporting and tax portions of the exam.  The overview showed me that I needed a little additional study time on the insurance and governmental contract information.

Once taking the overview course, I sat down with "The Book" and started reading.  I tried to at least skim the whole book, but must admit that I did not make it through every chapter.  I really focused in on the areas I learned I was not proficient in during the overview webinar.

Good luck with taking the exam.

I strongly urge you to prepare for the exam. I agree with previous comments that the CCIFP Overview Seminar is valuable as and will show you the areas you need to concentrate on. Study Groups are also great if you have one available. The Colorado Chapter has been a leader in this approach.

When I took the exam, I self-assessed what knowledge domains I had experience with as opposed to those I did not. For those that I did not, I studied the related chapters in the Book.

Becoming a CCIFP will expand your professional knowledge and greatly enhance your credibility. I applaud your effort and wish you success with the exam.

18 months ago the board of ICCIFP revised the exam retake policy reducing the waiting period from 6 months to 2 weeks and the retake fee from $600 to $300.  The intent of this revision was to encourage more people to take the exam without overly penalizing unsuccessful attempts.  Yes, it can be very overwhelming to study for the exam and the average person spends about 40 hours of prep time.  However, CFMA has done an excellent job with the newest overview course/study guide so preparation has never been easier than it is now.

That being said, depending on the test-taker's knowledge level and experience, it's very possible to take the exam cold and pass it.  If you are unsuccessful, the worst case is you pay a $300 retake fee, wait 2 weeks and reschedule your exam at any of 500 testing centers nationwide.  In the meantime, there are excellent CFMA resources to target the areas where your knowledge was insufficient.

This was my process as well, and it worked for me! if nothing else, i think "The Book" is a fantastic resource, and i still refer to mine regularly. Our local chapter has occasionally offered an in person prep class also.

I took the exam and passed this past October. In addition to obtaining the credential, my goal was to get the most out of the studying process. I would recommend obtaining the CCIFP Study Guide which includes a proficiency self assessment. That will tell you where to focus your studying. I read the chapters in the book where needed, took the overview seminar, then took the practice exam. Once I was comfortable with the results of my practice exam, I signed up to take exam.
