    Haley,

I used Insight's Spreadsheet Server to setup a client's financials. It's fairly straight forward to setup. I think using the Silver level license is a good idea.

As far as paying for Spreadsheet Server, you may want to look at the capabilities of Power Query. Power Query is built into the newer versions of Excel and can pull data directly from your database. Here is a link to an example of a PowerPivot spreadsheet in Excel that is pulling the data directly from a SQL database. With the capabilities of Power Query and Power Pivot in Excel, pulling data into Excel worksheets is a great way to allow the flexibility of Excel, but still having a live connection to your data.

Like most reporting solutions, using Power Query requires knowledge of the database and data that you are connecting to. If Spreadsheet Server has templates that address enough of your reporting needs without requiring database knowledge it may be worth the price. If it requires you to find the correct tables and join them, you might want to consider trying to build the reports in Excel first.

I use Spreadsheet Server and Vista by Viewpoint. I do love Spreadsheet Server. Vista had a very outdated platform for financials and this product has given us a fresh looking set of easily generated financials. Here are some of my overall thoughts...
    1. I think having a general knowledge of my databases, and some previous experience with Crystal Reports, made this transition easier.
    2. Giving my owners access to a tool where they can easily jump from month to month or year to year in a financial statement is powerful.
    3. We have been able to create quick reports to mine out data from Vista that would have very difficult in Crystal. We have been able to pull data from multiple tables easier as well.
    4. You have to really use it to keep getting better with it if that makes sense. You have to commit to keep working with it to get the most out of it.
    5. The trainers were great and helped you create a good base of starter reports.
    6. The cost ended up being a little more than I originally anticipated but it has been worth every penny.

thanks for your insight Betsey.  ViewPoint client gets 2 Silver Licenses for free.  Do you have more powerful version?  or you have more users needing the Silver version?    We are in the process of getting the freebie Silver License to work.  But we were told that being on the Viewpoint cloud (VEC), we have to have MS Office 365.  Also, Silver version doesn't support multiple companies, and I thought down the road we may need to upgrade to more powerful version.   Anyone else with comments on this dynamic tool would be appreciated.

Before you upgrade Spreadsheet Server, compare with other Excel based tools. A couple of examples are Liberty Reports Excel-Based Reporting from Event 1 Software, and ProspectionBI. Liberty Reports is much less expensive; not sure about the cost of ProspectionBI. I also like that they don't require separate investments for Job Cost versus GL.

    Helena,

Many Vista customers have discovered the 2 free Silver licenses and Financial Reporting workbook included with Spreadsheet Server give them with all the power and flexibility they need to create a complete set of financials.

The Balance Sheets, Income Statements, Cash Flow and Trial Balance worksheets, all included at no cost,  are fully editable and extendable, allowing you to add columns, rows, calculations, and graphs using standard Excel functionality.  The workbook and each worksheet (report) includes a set of runtime parameters that provide each interactive user (Silver license) full control over the data they want to see (i.e. easily select single or multiple company, period(s), department(s), etc.).

The Gold and Platinum license levels unlock additional functionality (e.g. report scheduling/distribution, access to Vista data beyond GL, query designer), and offer significant value, but I recommend exploring and learning the full capabilities of your Silver licenses before making the additional investment.

We don't utilize VEC so I'm not sure about MS Office 365.

My owners utilize the free Silver licenses to update sheets that were designed internally.  They are currently only updating single company reports on their own so I'm not sure if the multiple company issue is accurate.

We also have Gold licenses that allow us to create our own reports utilizing all of our data, not just the GL.  We do have two of these so that more than one person can work on report creation. These Gold licenses have also allowed us to create reports for multiple companies as well as consolidated statements.  We have created WIP schedules, employee schedules, etc.

    Hopefully this info helps!
