We are implementing a new ERP.  Any suggestions for dashboard metrics, relative to job costing/billing, project oversite, executive views, etc?

    Thanks.

We already bought the tool.  We are just seeking suggested metrics.

    Hi Chris,

Not sure if this is the type of info you're looking for, but in case it's helpful...

At the company-wide, executive dashboard level, here are some of the KPIs that the owners we work with value most:

    1. Total backlog
    2. Gross margin of backlog
    3. Days Sales Outstanding (DSO)
    4. New work sold
    5. Revenue (work put in place) - company-wide
    6. Net over/under billing
    7. Total job hours worked
    8. Cash on hand
    9. Dollar value of bids (4 divided by 9 = win %)
    10. Profit Before Tax (PBT) - $ and % of Revenue
    11. Revenue (work put in place) - for a focus revenue stream (one that they're trying to grow as part of their strategic plan)

We look at each month's values and trends over time.

I know the above seem basic, but they often stimulate a fruitful discussion and follow up action.

Then there's ad hoc analysis. This week, for instance, I showed the owners of two companies their WIP sorted to highlight their 10 largest underbilled jobs, and even though the PMs review each job monthly with their Controller, some serious issues requiring corrective action came to light.

    David, thanks.  Much appreciated.

I like your example of underbilled WIP.  That is something on our radar here as well, as our current tools and metrics have an appreciable lag.

If OK, I may reach out to you with some follow-up questions?
